CNNi: Navalny chief of staff to Biden: Go for Putin's money

Leonid Volkov, chief of staff for Kremlin critic Alexey Navalny, talks to CNN International's Becky Anderson about Navalny's trial in Moscow and their campaign against Vladimir Putin. Navalny appeared in a Moscow court, where he ridiculed claims he broke his parole conditions while in a coma and launched an extraordinary attack on Russian President Vladimir Putin, denouncing him as a "little thieving man." Navalny was detained two weeks ago upon his return to Moscow from Berlin, accused of failing to meet his parole terms under a 2014 suspended sentence for embezzlement a case he has dismissed as politically motivated. Prison authorities are now seeking to replace his suspended sentence with a 3.5-year prison term, a move that could further inflame the anti-government protests that have engulfed Russia for the past several weeks. A perennial thorn in President Vladimir Putin's side, Navalny had spent five months in Germany recovering from Novichok poisoning before his return to Moscow on January 17. He has blamed the attack on Russian security services and Putin himself, accusations that the Kremlin has repeatedly denied. #ConnectTheWorld #CNNInterntional #Navalny What does Putin want in Ukraine? Thousands of people in Moscow and across Russia who took to the streets Sunday were met with the harshest show of force the country has seen in recent years. Protesters throughout the country had gathered for the second weekend in a row to support jailed opposition leader Alexey Navalny, who has been held by Russian authorities since mid-January. More than 5,000 people were detained in at least 85 cities as of late Sunday, according to the independent monitoring group OVD-Info a record since 2011. In Moscow, the capital, more than 1,600 people were arrested, including Navalny's wife Yulia, though she was later released. Navalny himself has been behind bars since shortly after he arrived in Moscow on January 17. The longtime Russian dissident had spent the previous several months in Germany where he was recovering from being poisoned with Novichok, a powerful nerve agent. Navalny accused the Russian government and President Vladimir Putin of trying to kill him, an allegation the Kremlin has repeatedly denied. A joint investigation last month by CNN and the investigative group Bellingcat implicated the FSB in Navalny's August poisoning, piecing together how an elite unit at the agency followed Navalny's team throughout a trip to Siberia, at the end of which Navalny fell ill from exposure to military-grade Novichok. Russia has denied involvement in the case. #FrederikPleitgen #CNNInternational #News

CNNi: Coup in Myanmar after Aung San Suu Kyi and leaders detained

Myanmar's powerful military has taken control of the country in a coup and declared a state of emergency, following the detention of Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior government leaders in early morning raids Monday. The country woke up to widespread internet and communications blackouts, closed banks, and soldiers in army fatigues patrolling the streets of Myanmar's largest city, Yangon. Residents turning on their television sets could only access the military-owned Myawaddy TV channel, with all other news channels seemingly blocked. As news filtered through that the country's democratically-elected leaders had been detained in the capital, a news anchor announced on the military-owned channel that power had been handed over to army chief Min Aung Hlaing. In the address, the military confirmed it had detained the country's de facto civilian leader Suu Kyi, along with other high ranking National League for Democracy (NLD) leaders, in response to alleged voting irregularities in November's election. Suu Kyi's party, the NLD claimed an overwhelming victory in that election, taking 83% of the vote, which granted it another five years in government. The military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party won just 33 out of a possible 476 seats. The coup came just hours before the first session of the new parliament was set to open, and follows weeks of worsening political tensions in the country over the disputed election amid rumors that the military could take over. #CNNInternational #IvanWatson #ConnectTheWorld

A team of World Health Organization investigators in Wuhan are visiting a laboratory that has been the focus of conspiracies and speculation about the origin of the coronavirus pandemic. The WHO investigators began research in the central Chinese city last week, after a 14-day quarantine and bureaucratic delays. Their work has been subject to intense scrutiny and political pressure from both within China and outside the country. Few places they are visiting are as controversial as a laboratory run by the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which officials in former US President Donald Trump's administration suggested, without providing evidence, could have been the origin of the coronavirus. The lab in question, which is affiliated with the central government-run Chinese Academy of Sciences, is the only one in mainland China equipped for the highest level of biocontainment, known as Biosafety Level 4 (BSL-4). BSL-4 labs are designed to study the world's most dangerous pathogens those that pose a high risk for transmission, are frequently fatal and most often have no reliable cure, such as coronaviruses. #CNNInternational #Wuhan #News

CNNi: Protests erupt in Moscow after Navalny sent to prison again

A Moscow court sent Alexey Navalny to prison for more than two and a half years on Tuesday, closing a heated hearing in which the Kremlin critic ridiculed claims he broke his parole conditions while recovering from poisoning, and denounced Russia's leader as "Putin the poisoner." The decision is likely to inflame anger among Navalny's supporters, as tens of thousands of Russians have turned out for protests over the past two weekends, many demanding the activist's release. His allies had already called for another round of nationwide demonstrations this weekend. Navalny was detained two weeks ago upon his return to Moscow from Berlin, where he spent several months recovering from poisoning with nerve agent Novichok. He blames the attack on Russian security services and on President Vladimir Putin himself, accusations that the Kremlin has repeatedly denied. The court on ruled that while Navalny was out of the country, he violated probation from a 2014 embezzlement case in which he had received a three-and-a-half year suspended sentence and five years of probation. Navalny describes the case politically motivated. His suspended sentence will now be replaced with a prison term. The judge took into account the 11 months Navalny had already spent under house arrest as part of the decision. #QuestMeansBusiness #Navalny #CNNInternational

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told a Jerusalem court he is not guilty of one charge of bribery and three charges of fraud and breach of trust. The appearance was Netanyahu's second in court since his corruption trial formally began in May. Netanyahu, wearing a black mask, entered the court shortly after 9 a.m. and stood to confirm that the pleas of not guilty, submitted earlier in written form by his lawyers, represented his reply to the charges. "I confirm the written answer submitted in my name," the Prime Minister told the judges. Netanyahu, who is the first sitting Israeli Prime Minister to appear in court as a defendant, is charged in three separate cases. In the most serious case, Netanyahu is accused of advancing regulatory benefits worth more than 1 billion shekels (more than $300 million) in favor of a telecommunications company controlled by a millionaire friend, prosecutors say. In exchange, Netanyahu received favorable coverage from a news site, even influencing wording and story selection, prosecutors allege. Monday's court session is also discussing the trial's timetable, in particular when full evidentiary proceedings should take place. Israelis vote in a general election in six weeks' time, and in a possible indication of the Prime Minister's desire to delay the prosecution opening and calling of witnesses, one of his most loyal party allies has called on judges to postpone further hearings until after the vote on March 23. #CNNInternational #News #ConnectTheWorld

Tom Moore, the 100-year-old World War II veteran whose efforts to raise millions for the UK's National Health Service made him a universally adored icon during the first wave of the Covid-19 outbreak, has died in hospital after himself contracting the disease, his family said. Known affectionately as Captain Tom, Moore raised almost £33 million ($45 million) by walking laps of his garden last year. His exploits united a country frozen in lockdown and made him an unlikely celebrity late in his life, earning him a military promotion, a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II and a number-one single. Moore tested positive for the virus and was taken to a hospital on Sunday, suffering from breathing problems after being treated for pneumonia, his family said. They announced his death on Tuesday. "It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear father, Captain Sir Tom Moore," the family said in a statement to PA Media. "The last year of our father's life was nothing short of remarkable. He was rejuvenated and experienced things he'd only ever dreamed of," they added. "Whilst he'd been in so many hearts for just a short time, he was an incredible father and grandfather, and he will stay alive in our hearts forever." Buckingham Palace said the Queen was sending a private message of condolence to Moore's family, as numerous figures in British politics, culture, sport and society paid tribute to him. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he was "a hero in the truest sense of the word," and Moore's foundation, set up in the wake of his remarkable fundraising achievements, said it was "heartbroken." #CNNInternational #News #TomMoore

A Moscow court sent Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny to prison for more than two and a half years on Tuesday, prompting protests across the country. The ruling closed a heated hearing in which the Kremlin critic ridiculed claims he broke his parole conditions while recovering from poisoning, and denounced President Vladimir Putin as "Putin the poisoner." Navalny was first detained two weeks ago upon his return to Moscow from Berlin, where he spent several months recovering from poisoning with nerve agent Novichok an attack he blames on Russian security services and on Putin himself. The court on Tuesday ruled that while Navalny was in Germany, he violated probation terms from a 2014 case in which he had received a suspended sentence of three and a half years. That suspended sentence will now be replaced with a prison term. The judge took into account the 11 months Navalny had already spent under house arrest as part of the decision. He will appeal the verdict, according to his lawyer Olga Mikhailova. Speaking outside the courthouse after the sentencing, she said Navalny took the verdict "bravely as usual." The verdict sparked swift condemnation abroad. US Secretary of State Tony Blinken called on the Russian government to "immediately and unconditionally release" Navalny. The UK, Germany, France and others issued similar statements. It also inflamed anger among Navalny's supporters, who took to the streets in vast crowds on Tuesday night. In central Moscow, protesters calling for his release were met with a show of force from authorities, as hundreds of riot police combed the vicinity of the courthouse street by street and forced individuals into waiting buses. More than 1,000 people have been detained across Russia, according to independent monitoring organization OVD-Info. Navalny's team later posted a message to Telegram thanking supporters and urging them to go home. "Putin failed to kill Alexey Navalny - and therefore decided to put him in jail for 2 years and 8 months. We will never tolerate a government that kills opponents and imprisons innocent people," it read. "We will definitely take to the streets of the city again. For now just get carefully to the nearest metro station." #ConnectTheWorld #CNNInternational #News What does Putin want in Ukraine?
