Travel Vlog #122 | Sofia, Bulgaria #Bulgaria #sofia Country 30/193 Welcome to our second video exploring Sofia, Bulgaria! This country has pleasantly surprised us, and we're so happy to be here. We spent our first day walking around just enjoying the vibe of the city, and today we're going more in depth, starting with the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. After seeing a few more churches, we decided to check out the history museum. Since Sofia is one of the oldest cities in Europe, it comes as no surprise the museum is full of artifacts from the last 2000 or so years! We ended our night with a traditional Bulgarian meal - lots of meat! We did our own self-guided walking tour around the city and it's become one of our favorite travel spots in Europe. Hopefully this travel guide and vlog gives you an idea of things to do in Sofia! Welcome to another video! Today, I will be talking about the pros and cons of living in Bulgaria, specifically Sofia and Plovdiv. I'll further discuss whether Bulgaria is attractive for expats or not. As someone that moved to Bulgaria to start a business over 6 years ago, I have a lot to say about every aspect of life in Bulgaria. All of the pros can be taken as the main reasons why emigration to Bulgaria was my first choice. If you are considering residency in Bulgaria, then this video is for you. So, what are the advantages and disadvantages of living in Bulgaria as an expat? In my previous video, where I talk about why I left Greece and moved to Bulgaria (you can check out that video by clicking this link: 🤍 I’ve mentioned that Bulgaria is one of the cheapest countries in Europe, as well as that it has the lowest personal and corporate tax rates within the EU. Bulgaria has a flat tax system where personal and corporate tax rates are 10% across the board, which is why many people come to Bulgaria in order to open up a company or be a freelancer. So, if you have an internet-based business, then Bulgaria will not disappoint you. Bulgaria is also one of the first countries to make it onto the list as one of the cheapest countries to retire to precisely for this reason. These are just two of the many pros of living in Bulgaria. It’s a country that has a lot to offer. But what are the cons of living in Bulgaria? As you can probably guess, one of the main cons of living in Bulgaria is connected to the very cheap lifestyle in the country. Bad infrastructure and corruption in Bulgaria are some of the main issues in the country, more serious ones anyway. In this video, I list many more, so that you can get a clear picture of what the negatives of living here are. Are any of you living in Bulgaria currently? What are your pros and cons? Every spring, the town of Stara Zagora in central Bulgaria hosts a controversial bride market where young virgins are paraded in front of suitors who bid on them. The market is the biggest annual get-together for Bulgaria’s 18,000-strong Kalaidzhi Roma clan, a subgroup of the Roma people who face constant prejudice and exclusion across Europe. Unable to live off their ancient coppersmith heritage, the constantly sensationalised bride markets are one of the last surviving Kalaidzhi traditions. To find out why these medieval-sounding markets exist in modern Europe, and how Kalaidzhi girls feel about being sold off, Broadly correspondent Milène Larsson travels to the village of Orizovo to spend time with a family with two daughters as they're preparing for the annual bride market.

I made a stop in Sofia, Bulgaria over the coarse of my travels in the last few weeks. All I can say is I wish I had reserved more time for Bulgaria because it seems like an absolutely lovely country. Sofia was clean, easy to travel about in, the food was delicious, the history interesting, and the people friendly. Bulgaria is a melting pot of cultures, you can find Greek, Turkish, Russian, and German influences there. A friend told me years ago that Bulgaria is one of the hidden gems of Europe and oh man was he right! The things that surprised me most about Sofia are the lovely architecture and the high level of English spoken there. Join me for the video and see what Sofia has to offer! Bulgaria is one of the poorest countries in the E.U. But despite its apparent poverty, its people are exceptionally friendly and is overflowing with amazing nature, tasty cuisine and plenty to see and do. However beware of these 8 More Things Not To do in Bulgaria! 1. Don't Visit Rose Valley Without Roses Bulgaria is the biggest producer of Rose oil in the World. This is all produced in Rose Valley, in Karlovo, so you can imagine the sight and smell... However the roses only flower between May and June, and it's not really worth the trip to Karlovo if you're going to miss Rose Valley without any roses... 2. Don’t Go To Sunny Beach You may of heard of Sunny Beach as a must visit Bulgarian summer location. And maybe that's the whole problem. It's become known for being a cheap holiday destination with plenty of sun, sand and well... drunken tourists vomiting in the streets... If you're hoping to meet a member of Geordie Shore it's probably the place for you, but if not... Stay away. 3. Don’t Trust Taxi Drivers Pretty much everything in Bulgaria is cheap compared to Western prices. Not surprising as this is one of the poorest countries in the E.U... Perhaps due to this, taxi drivers have been known to pray on tourists, charging them extortionate prices on arriving at their destination, so be careful to check the driver's rate before getting in! 4. Beware The Weight of Food In Bulgaria you might easily find yourself at a restaurant, staring blankly at a Menu written in Bulgarian, hoping that what you order will be enough to fill the gaping hole in your appetite. Thankfully however, it's customary there to display the weight of the dish in the menu. This way you know exactly what to expect! 5. Don’t Talk About Communism Yes, Bulgaria has a communist past. No you shouldn't talk about it. Most of the locals won't have been brought up during the communist regime, but the older ones will have, and there are many mixed opinions about how it has left current day Bulgaria. One of the relics left by the regime is the abandoned Buzludzha Monument, well worth a visit, just don't talk about it... 6. Do Your Homework Bulgaria is not a heavily tourist ready country. Most of the street signs and marking are in Bulgarian using the Cyrillic alphabet. You're not even going to know how to guess at pronouncing any of the road signs. Come prepared, study some pronunciations, or just install Google Translate to convert text on the fly. 7. Don’t Buy Bottled Water Okay, this goes against everything we've always said. It still is a very sensible idea to only drink bottled water whilst abroad. But Bulgaria is known historically for the supposed healing powers of its water of which there are 225 mineral springs, and there is always a fountain nearby. Remember Spartacus? Some believe his power came from being raised on this Thracian elixir. 8. Don’t Limit Yourself to Sofia The capital city of Bulgaria is a vibrant European city. But there is so much more to see and do in this Balkan wonderland. Where do you want to know what not to do in next? Comment Below? Get more Tips here! 🤍

Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Nessebar is located in the south-east of Bulgaria, on a picturesque peninsula. Old wooden houses and Byzantine churches combine with the charm of the rocky coastline to create a unique ensemble, waiting to be discovered. About 30 km north of Bourgas and only a few kilometers from the Coast of the Sun, located on a very small peninsula in the Black Sea, Nessebar is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It was founded by the Thracians around 3000 years before the new era and represents the richest city in Byzantine architecture in Bulgaria. In antiquity it was one of the powerful Hellenistic colonies on the southern (Bulgarian) coast of the Black Sea together with Sozopol (Apollonia) and Pomorie (Anhialo), its powerful rivals. Her name was Messemvria. 23 churches and monuments trace the Greek, Roman and Byzantine past of Nessebar. The city was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983 and almost left it in 2010 due to the excessive invasion of the small peninsula by the stalls of merchants selling souvenirs to tourists. Nessebar experienced a great economic and commercial boom in antiquity. Powerful colony, in the year 440 before the new era the city began to mint its own coins, then between the 3rd and 2nd century before the new era it began to mint its first gold coins. The objects exhibited in the city's archaeological museum testify to the wealth of its inhabitants and the opulent life that was led there. Just like Sozopol Nessebar was conquered by the Roman legions around the year 70 before the new era. The capital of the Empire was not long in being established in Constantinople and Nessebar became the favorite place of the emperors who came to take care of their health at the thermal baths. After the establishment of Christianity as the official religion Nessebar continued to develop with the same pomp. More than 40 churches were built, the main one being called Saint Sofia, like the one in Constantinople. #nessebar #bulgaria #travel #Village #europe #traditional

Behind Bars - Episode 5: Sofia Central Prison, Bulgaria | Prison Documentary Behind Bars - Episode - Tent City Jail, Phoenix, Arizona, US: 🤍 With a crumbling foundation more than fit for demolition, the conditions in Sofia Central prison is inhospitable for anyone, including criminals. However, with multiple prisoner cells, bunks stacked 3 stories high and horrid isolation cells, prisoners live idly behind bars for 23 hours a day. The series accompanies guards on their daily routines: those who struggle to maintain law and order and those who abuse their powers mercilessly. But above all, each episode allows the viewer to see the world from the prisoner’s point of view: the newcomer spending his first terrifying night locked up. Felons who live for the day when their fate will be decided: will it be life behind bars? A worse fate? Foreigners, far away from home, languishing away under the most horrendous conditions. And mothers who have to raise their children in the shadow of prison bars. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Subscribe Free Documentary Channel for free: 🤍 Join the club and become a Free Documentary Patron: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ #FreeDocumentary #Documentary #BehindBars ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Free Documentary is dedicated to bringing high-class documentaries to you on YouTube for free.
