Think Like A Journalist | Kelsey Samuels | TEDxPlano

Journalists have a unique skill set in an era of fake news and echo chambers. Kelsey Samuels asks the question, “What if I’m wrong?” Kelsey Samuels is no stranger to North Texas and its changing landscape. She graduated from Texas Christian University with a B.A. in Journalism, then worked as web editor and general assignment reporter for the Lufkin Daily News in East Texas. She currently works for the Plano Star Courier as the community reporter. Kelsey is a fan of the internet, but as a journalist she’s an observer more than a participant. This is why she believes her tweets and posts are so lame. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. How do journalists find news? - BBC My World

How do journalists find news? When making the news, journalists have to do a lot of research to find a good story. Social media and the internet have sped up the process, but journalists still have to consider where to find their sources, what questions to ask, and whether or not they can trust their sources. Then, they gather information such as interviews, videos and photos to tell that story, edit it together and publish it. This series, made in partnership with Microsoft Education, BBC Learning and Angelina Jolie, will give you the tools to fact-check stories and spot fake news, so you can make your own decisions about what to read or watch, and what information to trust. Lessons in investigative journalism: Carol Marin at TEDxMidwest

This is probably one of the most intriguing speakers of this edition of TEDx Midwest. Carol Marin, a Veteran Investigative Journalist, taps into her audience's deeply rooted interest in bad guys and catastrophic events. She is completely captivating as she recounts thrilling tales of organized crime and political corruption in "The Windy City" as well as the fear and chaos of the day she spent rushing toward the falling Twin Towers in New York City. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Why Journalism is the Subject of the Future

Check out the article here: 🤍 Transcript: Our world is changing with things like artificial intelligence, automation, and virtual reality. Our students need skills like digital citizenship, media literacy, and creativity. But often, these skills are taught in isolation. However, there is a surprising subject that combines all of these skills in an interconnected way. It’s journalism. That’s right. Journalism. When students engage in journalism, they learn how to identify key information and engage in media literacy. Here, they improve in their critical thinking skills as they learn how to curate information. Student journalists learn communication skills as they engage in interviews. They learn empathy and digital citizenship as they connect with an audience. When this happens, they grow fearless and bold but also humble, as they embrace constructive criticism. They develop a growth mindset as they engage in iterative thinking through each revision of their work. And whether they are creating videos, podcasts, blogs, or newspapers, they are developing their creative voice as they share their work with the world.

How one journalist risked her life to hold murderers accountable - Christina Greer

Ida B. Wells was an investigative journalist, civil rights leader, and anti-lynching advocate who fought for equality and justice. In the late 1800’s, lynchings were happening all over the American South, often without any investigation or consequences for the murderers. A young journalist set out to expose the truth about these killings. Her reports shocked the nation, launched her journalism career and a lifelong pursuit of civil rights. How Journalism Became One Of The Most Dangerous Jobs In The World | Peter Greste | TEDxSydney

When foreign correspondent, Peter Greste was arrested in Cairo while working for Al Jazeera as a journalist, his letters smuggled from prison helped launch a global campaign that eventually saw him and his two colleagues released after more than a year in prison. In this talk Peter Greste provides a backdrop to the increasing violence and antagonism towards journalists and offers a passionate argument for press freedom everywhere. Peter Greste is an award-winning foreign correspondent who spent 25 years working for the BBC, Reuters, CNN and Al Jazeera in some of the world’s most volatile places. From Afghanistan, to Latin American, Africa and the Middle East, he has reported from the frontlines and beyond. He is best known for becoming a headline himself, when he and two of his colleagues were arrested in Cairo while working for Al Jazeera, and charged with terrorism offences. In letters smuggled from prison, he described the arrests as an attack on media freedom. The letters helped launch a global campaign that eventually got them released after more than 400 days in prison. His stance helped earn him awards from the Royal Television Society, the Walkley Foundation, the RSL, the Australian Human Rights Commission and the International Association of Press Clubs. Since his release, Peter has continued to campaign for press freedom everywhere. He now lives in Sydney, working as a freelance journalist. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at 🤍

How Iran's journalists and citizen reporters risk their lives | DW News

Iran has been ramping up its threats against journalists and dissidents as it struggles to contain the flow of anti-government information. As Iran is rocked by protests, dissidents are fighting a constant battle to stay ahead of Iran's intelligence services and get information out. The Committee to Protect Journalists says 62 journalists have been arrested by the Iranian regime for reporting the death of Jina Mahsa Amini, who died in custody of the 'morality police' in September. This means many people rely on foreign media outlets for independent coverage of events going on back home. And DW's Persian service is one of them. Responsible Journalism in Philippine Society | Atom Araullo | TEDxDLSU

Mr. Araullo discussed how Philippine journalism is being affected by the widespread digitalization that not only the country is undergoing, but also the whole world. He mentioned how journalists have to grapple with the adjustments in the media landscape, as this affects how they deliver the messages that people should hear and see. He also pointed out how the blurring boundary between social media and news is connected to the proliferation of fake news since before the national elections in 2016, with which he ended how journalists need to go back to their purpose, to the reason why they wanted to partake in the industry in the first place. Atom Araullo is the host of GMA Network's "Atom Araullo Specials", a monthly documentary on pressing social issues. One of the hosts of "I-witness", the country's most awarded and longest-running documentary show. Tho of his recent doscumentaries earned two gold medals at the prestigious 2018 US International Film and Video Festival - "Silang Kinalimutan" (i-witness), which tackles the plight of the Rohingya refugees, and "Philippine Seas", which uncovers the wonders of and threats to the country's marine resources.
