The existential threat of nuclear war is no longer a Cold War memory. With nine countries armed with around 15,000 atomic bombs up to 53 times stronger than those dropped in the Second World War, the stakes are arguably higher. Ahead of the International Day against Nuclear Tests on August 29 2018, we met up with British atomic veterans who were present at test sites in Australia and the Pacific, to find out what it’s like to experience a nuclear bomb explosion up close. While most people know about the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, fewer are aware that an additional 2,000 atomic bombs were detonated after World War II and tested on hundreds of thousands of young soldiers to prepare them for nuclear war. *This video originally aired on MOTHERBOARD in 2018 Click here to subscribe to VICE: 🤍 About VICE: The Definitive Guide To Enlightening Information. Beginning in 1945, and until atmospheric nuclear testing was banned, the United States conducted 210 above-ground nuclear tests, documented on film. Now, footage that has survived, now being preserved by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, is being analyzed for their scientific data, changing what we previously knew about the destructive power of our nuclear arsenal. Russia has released previously classified footage of the world's largest nuclear explosion, caused when the Soviet Union detonated the so-called Tsar Bomba almost 60 years ago. The hydrogen bomb, which carried the force of 50 million tons of conventional explosives, was detonated in a test on Oct.1961, 4,000 meters over the remote Novaya Zemlya archipelago above the Arctic Circle. The footage shows an immense fireball and a 60-km high mushroom cloud rising after the explosion lit up the sky. The views were captured from several angles by cameras installed on the ground and on board two Soviet aircraft. A documentary featuring the footage was published online for the first time by Russian state nuclear agency Rosatom last week as part of events to mark 75th anniversary of Russia's atomic industry. These Are The 5 Largest Nuclear Detonations in History. Since the first nuclear test on 15 July 1945, there have been over 2,051 other nuclear weapons tests around the world. Within 20 years, the US and USSR tested nuclear weapons larger than 10 megatons, or 10 million tons of TNT. For scale, these weapons were at least 500 times as strong as the first atomic bomb. To put the size of history's largest nuclear blasts to scale, we have used Alex Wellerstein's Nukemap, a tool for visualizing the terrifying real-world impact of a nuclear explosion.

Wahoo blast the test conditions were met on May 16 1958 allowing for the nuclear device to be detonated. Within a second of detonation, a spray dome was created that reached a height of 840 feet (260 m) after seven seconds. The overall shape of the spray dome resembled a cone with 45 degree sloped sides. Plumes were seen breaking through the spray dome after six seconds in every direction. The vertical plume continued rising until 12 seconds after the blast while the lateral plumes traveled for 20 seconds before collapsing. The diameter of the spray dome was approximately 3,800 feet (1,200 m) at the 20 second mark.(p237) The base surge reached a radius of 8,000 feet (2,400 m) in the downwind direction after 1.7 seconds. The downwind surge aided by a 15 knots (17 mph; 28 km/h) wind reached speeds of 21 knots (24 mph; 39 km/h). This base surge could be seen for three and a half minutes and for longer from the air as it continued to move across the ocean. When the spray dome and base surge had dissipated, a foam patch could be seen spreading from the surface zero water to reach over 6,000 feet (1,800 m).(p238) The nuclear blast was calculated to be 9 kilotons of TNT (38 TJ). All fallout stayed within the predicted fallout area with a maximum of 0.030 R/hr. The target ship at 5,900 yards (2.9 nmi; 3.4 mi; 5.4 km) was directly hit by the shockwave, vibrating the entire ship and shaking it violently. The Moran merchant marine ship moored at 2,346 feet (715 m) away was immobilized due to shock damage to its main and auxiliary equipment while also suffering minor hull damage. One hour and ten minutes after detonation, a five-gallon water sample was taken directly above the blast location showing 5 R/hr. The retrieval team entered a 3.8 R/hrfield after an hour and thirty five minutes. #NuclearWeapons #Documentary #AtomicBomb #Atomic #Bomb #History #Science #Nuclear #Detonation #Thermonuclear #Radiation #Movie #Rare #Footage #HydrogenBomb #Hydrogen #Energy #Film #Entertainment #Effect #Underwater #NuclearExplosion #NuclearTesting #AlbertEinstein #Oppenheimer #LosAlamos #NationalSecurityScience #TNT #USA #China #UK #Canada #Soviet #Nuclear #NuclearWeapon #Blast #Rare #Footage #Film #2020 #2021 #burst #Cloud #MushroomCloud #ShockWave #Shock #Videos #Book #History #Coldwar #History #Biden #Education

During the Cold War, the US government launched a 1.4 megaton bomb into space. Starfish Prime, as the test was called, was the highest-altitude nuclear test in history. But what would happen if we tried the same experiment with a 50 megaton bomb, like the record-setting Tsar Bomba? #Space #NuclearBomb Science Insider tells you all you need to know about science: space, medicine, biotech, physiology, and more. Subscribe to our channel and visit us at: 🤍 Science Insider on Facebook: 🤍 Science Insider on Instagram: 🤍 Business Insider on Twitter: 🤍 Tech Insider on Twitter: 🤍 Following is a transcript of the video: Imagine if we detonated a nuclear bomb in space? Actually, you don’t have to. You can see it for yourself. That was Starfish Prime — the highest-altitude nuclear test in history. In 1962, the US government launched a 1.4 megaton bomb from Johnston Island. And detonated it 400 km above the Pacific — about as high as where the International Space Station orbits today. The detonation generated a giant fireball and created a burst of energy called an electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, that expanded for over 1,000 kilometers. EMPs can cause a power surge, damaging electronic equipment in the process. And this one was no different. Across Hawaii, street lights went dark, telephones went down, and navigation and radar systems went out, not to mention the six, or so, satellites that failed. And all this came from a 1.4 megaton bomb. Tsar Bomba, which was the largest nuclear bomb that has ever been detonated, was 50 megatons. So what would happen if we detonated that above the United States? For starters, there's no atmosphere in space. So, there would be no mushroom-shaped cloud and no subsequent blast wave or mass destruction. Instead, you’d get a blinding fireball 4 times the size of Starfish Prime’s. And if you looked directly at it within the first 10 seconds, you could permanently damage your eyes. Satellites wouldn’t be safe either. Radiation from the explosion would fry the circuits of hundreds of instruments in low-earth orbit. Including communication satellites, military spy satellites, and even science telescopes like the Hubble. Plus, astronauts on board the International Space Station might be at risk of radiation poisoning. On the ground, however, you’d probably be fine. The detonation point would be far enough away that the high-energy radiation wouldn’t reach you. But don’t get too comfortable. Remember Starfish Prime’s EMP? This time, the EMP would cover ⅓ of the entire United States, bringing down regional power grids and electronics like a lightning strike. But it’s not all doom and gloom. The radiation would also interact with oxygen and nitrogen in the atmosphere and create a spectacular aurora near the detonation site, that would last for days. Now, let’s be clear. This will probably never happen. Super-thermonuclear devices like the Tsar Bomba no longer exist. And even if they did, the Tsar Bomba weighed around 27,000 kilograms. There are only a couple of operational rockets in the world that could manage to lift something that heavy into space in the first place. So we're probably safe from that, anyway. This video was made in large part thanks to the calculations from physicists at Los Alamos National Lab.

Subject Zero Patreon 🤍 Neutronium Bomba on Earth - What would happen? A single neutron releases about 1 MeV, which is insignificant. But if we had, let’s say, 1 kg, then things become a bit more interesting. In this calculations, we assumed that 1g of neutrons has 6.e23 number of particles. By that we can calculate the energy multiplying the result by 1 MeV. Then we converted the result into Joules and divided it by the total energy in 1 ton of TNT. At the end of 1 kg total decay, the full energy released would be equivalent to 11.5 kilotons of TNT. That is almost as powerful as the first nuclear bomb detonated, Little Boy”. Though it releases almost the same energy as the first nuclear weapons, I must point out that its explosion would not be the same. As neutrons decay, it will release all that energy throughout its half-lives’. Curiously enough, it would be releasing energy for about 15 half-lives’ or 2 and half hours. However, there is a caveat. Its density, which I will explain in detail later in the video but first we need to comprehend what limits current nuclear bomb technologies.
